Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi and Hira Foundation School

A Short History

Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi

Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi is one of Pakistan’s best-known Islamic seminaries. Mufti Muhammad Shafi, a Darul Uloom Deoband graduate and former Head Mufti there, founded it in June 1951 at Nanak Wara, Karachi, to work for the implementation of Shariah and to establish a centre of higher Islamic learning in a major city. Modelled on Darul Uloom Deoband, it outgrew its first building and moved to Korangi on 17 March 1957. It has since grown to cover Islamic education, fatwa, hadith, Qur’an, Islamic economics, research and women’s education.

Its presidents have been Mufti Muhammad Shafi (1951 to 1976), Abdul Hai Arifi, Mufti Rafi Usmani (1986 to 2022) and, today, Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani.

Hira Foundation School

Hira Foundation School (HFS) is a division of Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi, in the same compound on Main Korangi Industrial Area Road. It offers Cambridge education in line with Islamic values, from Pre-School to O Levels, with a hybrid A Level and a Shariah-compliant ACCA programme. Its Darul Quran (including Hifz) and Darul Arabia teach the Qur’an and Arabic, and it offers a 100% free scholarship for deserving students. The school reflects the seminary’s aim of bringing religious and worldly education together.

Ownership and management

Hira Foundation School operates as a division of Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi and is run under the seminary’s administration, which is led by its president, Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani, a former judge of the Supreme Court’s Shariat Appellate Bench. The school’s Board of Management lists Mufti Taqi Usmani and Dr. Muhammad Imran Usmani, who is described as the head of the school. Dr. Imran Usmani is a Shariah scholar and advisor to Islamic financial institutions, and he teaches at Jamia Darul Uloom.
